Recipe List

Dear Readers,

Below you will find an up-to-date list of the dishes I have prepared.

I am starting to add live links to the Master Recipe list, but this will take some time to complete. You may need to use one of the  two "search" boxes, on the upper left or to the right, to locate a specific recipe.

Most of these recipes evolved out of the fifty weekly Slovenian dinners I prepared between January and December of 2012, as part of my Year of Cooking Ethnically. Since then, I have continued to cook and post, although at a somewhat more relaxed pace.

The first category is Potica, of course. That is where it all started for me.

The Master Recipe List (the next one) includes all the dishes I have made, arranged alphabetically. After that, I have sorted them into broad categories. Bear in mind that these categories can overlap. Many of the soups and dumplings can serve as main courses. Some of the breakfast dishes work well as desserts.

Most of these recipes are for traditional Slovenian (or Slovenian American) dishes and were inspired by my vintage cookbook collection.  Some, like cevapcici, can be considered more broadly Yugoslav or Balkan. Many, of course, reflect the culinary influence of Italy and Hungary, Slovenia's neighbors.  The sources of a recipe will usually be explored in detail in the post.  So when in doubt, read on.

Exceptions are noted with labels like: Slovenian-inspired, modern, Jewish, and original.  (There is also a separate "Jewish Connection" category at the end.)

Often, I will give both the Slovenian name and the English name or description for a recipe. Generally, the more familiar name comes first.

A few months after my official year of Slovenian cooking ended, I added a new category: Low Sodium.  LoSoSlo, for short.  I have added that designation to the alphabetical and category listings.  I have also added a Low Sodium collection at the bottom of the page. (I explain why I raised the salt alarm here.)

More recently, I added another new category: Gluten-Free.  (It's down toward the bottom of the page.)  I wanted to call attention to the traditional Slovenian buckwheat dishes that can be enjoyed by people who wish to avoid wheat and similar grains.  I've even experimented with a gluten-free potica! (Note that I haven't included every gluten free dish on the list.)

Happy Cooking and Dober Tek!

Blair K.

  1. Thank you for your website! I took a trip to Slovenia 2 yrs ago (Lake Bled) and fell in love with the region! I definitely will attempt to go back and stay longer and check out the rest of that beautiful country! I also fell in love with the food and will attempt to make Prekmurska Gibanica this Fall, as well as, goulash! Yum!

    1. Thanks for your kind words! We just made a second long visit and it was wonderful. Lake Bled is lovely (we were there 8 years ago) but there is so much more to see and do. Happy cooking, in the meantime!

  2. Can you tell me where I might find the cookbook "Woman's Glory, The Kitchen''...It's a Slovenian cookbook? I have been looking, and found it on Amazon, but it's very old used books for like $70. My mother had this book and I it can't be found, and I would love to get another for her. Just thought I'd try here, you might know?!))

    Thank you!

  3. Hi Marijo,

Thanks for writing. Yes, "Woman's Glory, The Kitchen" is a vintage Slovenian American cookbook, first published in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The only way to find copies is by searching online--EBay, Etsy, other used books sites. The organization that published it, The Slovenian Women's Union of America (SWUA) changed its name a few years ago to The Slovenian Union of America. (Men allowed now!) They have continued to publish updated versions of a similar cookbook, called "Pots and Pans" and "More Pots and Pans." Their most recent one is called "The Slovenian American Kitchen." I don't own that one--I love the old cookbooks! Hope this helps!
